Payroll Manager

Western Veterinary Partners (WVP) is a private equity-backed company that acquires, invests in, and supports veterinary practices and animal hospitals throughout the Western United States. WVP is a highly acquisitive company focused on continued growth and expansion across the country. Post-acquisition, WVP supports its partner practices with the non-clinical side of the business by providing industry proven non-clinical business support services.

We are expanding our payroll team and seeking a payroll professional who understands the unique factors involved in processing payroll for hundreds of locations over 40 states for our high-growth, fast-paced veterinary company. The payroll team at WVP is a critical function tightly integrated with all other departments and actively participates in the high-volume acquisition process. The successful candidate will be a flexible, hands-on, team player with a “no job too big or too small” mentality. They will enjoy a fast-paced environment, problem solving, love to reinvent and reimagine processes, and be highly communicative with internal and external customers.

This is a hybrid role based in central Denver.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Manage the payroll process ensuring that all payroll-related tasks are completed accurately and on time
  • Own and understand the payroll process end to end ensuring the accuracy of manual input & file uploads in ADP and pay run processing. Audit for the accuracy of employee pay, time off accruals and historical records.
  • Function as the payroll subject matter expert – consistently working toward operational precision through automation.
  • Research and resolve complex payroll issues and provide guidance on payroll best practices.
  • Maintain payroll processing systems to optimize data collection for reporting.
  • Process bi-weekly payroll in accordance with company policies, practices, and procedures as well as federal and state regulations.
  • Ensure operational efficiency and compliance by documenting and continuously improving procedures and workflows.
  • Assist with nationwide tax registrations and jurisdictional compliance effectively leveraging ADP Smart Compliance.
  • Stay updated on best practices and technology advancements and implement new procedures and policies in payroll operations.
  • Develop and conduct trainings to support managers on the use of the payroll platform.
  • Compile and analyze payroll data, make recommendations, and prepare error-free reporting for management.
  • Respond with urgency and accuracy to calls, emails and requests from employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage the payroll team – optimizing individual contributions
  • Promote teamwork and stellar communication.
  • Operate as the subject matter expert and escalation point.
  • Communicate job expectations of the payroll team.

Additional Criteria

  • 5+ years of experience with full cycle multi-state payrolls.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Business Administration, HR, or related field required or equivalent work experience.
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) required.
  • Ticketing system implementation experience preferred.
  • Deep understanding of ADP Workforce Now. Other payroll platform experience considered.
  • Highly proficient with the MS Office Suite of products and strong Excel skills.
  • Results-driven and process-improvement focused.
  • Effectively multitask and adjust to changing priorities.
  • Strong initiative, emotionally maturity and supportive nature.
  • Enjoys working as a team.
  • Local to the greater Denver area.

Our salary ranges are primarily determined by role, level, and location. The salary range for this role is $100,000 - $120,000 annually. The range provided for each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. The Company offers competitive compensation along with a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision benefits, vacation, sick leave, 401(k), and more depending on location.
